The idea for Gametje started at a Friday night house party shortly after John had moved to the Netherlands in 2015. John and his friends were playing the Jackbox Party Pack, and his Dutch friends wished there was a localized version so they could play with older family members who didn't speak English very well. Thinking, "Could it be so hard to make something similar?", he built a NodeJS prototype in late 2017. It was ugly, but it was playable.
As primarily a backend engineer, John quickly realized UI design was just as hard as he had feared. The prototype fizzled out when he took a new job and later welcomed a daughter to the world. Fast forward to January 2023: after shifting to a part-time schedule at work, he finally had two dedicated days a week to revive the project and wrote the very first lines of Gametje code.
With development running steadily alongside my day job, it was time to make things real. In April 2024, Gametje was officially established as a business with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK). This period was all about juggling part-time development while building out the initial catalog of games
August 2025 marked the biggest leap yet: John left his regular job to work on Gametje full-time. All that dedicated focus paid off just two months later when Gametje V1 officially launched in October 2025.
Gametje outgrew a one-person operation. Guillaume joined the team in April 2026 to help push the platform forward. Shortly after, the team brought on a designer who completely revamped the site just before the summer. This culminated in the launch of our new platform, Gametje V2, in October 2026.
